Nlp Hit The Mainstream | |||
Over recent years, NLP is reported to be one of the most powerful forms of applied psychology, so much so that those in a leadership role have been taking on its teachings to help enhance their performance. NLP is proclaimed to be the manual to the brain, helping to unlock and fully develop a range of skills already in possession. More recently NLP has hit the mainstream, with Darren Brown bringing NLP together with hypnoses, and parading it in the arena of "magic". Our fascination with watching people's eye movements to see if they are lying has made it into top US dramas such as Lie to me. We have heard examples of the techniques it offers, including the Fast Phobia Cure and Six Step Reframing. The key for NLP is that it encourages a person to aim for an outcome rather than a goal. A goal is something we want; an outcome is the result of our actions. This seemly small difference can have a direct impact on what we achieve, NLP argues that many goals do not come to fruition as they are often ill-formed, whereas NLP strives for well-formed outcomes, a result of our actions. And it is ultimately our actions that we have an influence and control of. NLP FOR ORGANISATIONSNLP has been used for many years to develop the skills of those in leadership and management. Communication, thinking and the capacity to manage change are all essential skills for these roles. NLP has been applied to develop specific skills around leadership, coaching, sales, managing change, presenting, influencing skills and negotiations. Moving everyone from where they are (present state) to where they want to be, having achieved their goals (desired state), is what leadership is all about. Doing this takes skill, just because a person is put into a leadership role, doesn't necessarily mean they have the capability or degree of influence to guide their organisation to the outcome they desire Good leaders know what it takes to get their workforce motivated. Not only do they take responsibility for directing, but also for coaching and motivating their team. A dull and uninspiring leader will have less people following them. One who leads with enthusiasm and passion are more likely to have more followers, however this is not always enough to get everyone on side. A leader's actions need to match their words, i.e., they need to be congruent. NLP AND TRAININGNLP coaching used to be something for the elite, something that was hugely costly and only open to a few. Now, applying NLP more widely can help your organisation develop a coaching culture, ultimately improving outcomes. It seems foolish not to use the positive teachings of NLP and apply it to all appropriate training courses. You do not need to be leading an organisation or team to understand that leadership skills have apositive role to play in success. To be personally successful, we need a well-formed outcome to be aiming for. Not only must we have the outcome, but a strategy to get us there. Ensuring that the training we apply in our organisations, picks up on the positive messages that NLP has, means that we can ensure that the people on the training course also feel positive about what they have learnt, and to feel engaged and truly believe that this training will make a difference to their working lives. Would this not help with the age-old problem of learning transfer? We need to be equipping staff with more than just the basics; we need to invest in them to ensure they invest in our organisations. To make them feel great about their work and themselves, meaning they will feel great about the work they do. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF APPLYING NLP? . Helps establish outcomes and not goals .
